Urimax 0.4 Capsule Overview:

Urimax 0.4 Capsule is a medication primarily used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men.

It contains Tamsulosin, an alpha-blocker, which helps to relax the smooth muscles in the prostate and urethra, making it easier for urine to flow through the urethra and improving urination. In addition, it reduces the urge to urinate.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a condition of an enlarged prostate, is commonly seen in men over the age of 50 years. BPH is a non-malignant (non-cancerous) condition, but it can lead to urinary tract infections and difficulty urinating.

Urimax 0.4 Capsule provides relief from its associated signs and symptoms such as dribbling, urgency, difficulty urinating, and frequent urge to urinate.

Composition:

Each hard gelatin capsule contains- Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (As modified release pellets): 400 mcg

Approved colours used in empty capsule shell.

Uses & Benefits of Urimax 0.4 Capsule:

Urimax 0.4 Capsule is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men and helps manage the following symptoms:

  • Improved urinary flow: The medication helps to improve urine flow by relaxing the smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck while reducing prostate size over time.
  • Reduced urinary frequency: Patients experience fewer trips to the bathroom, particularly during nighttime hours.
  • Relief from urgency: The urgent need to urinate is significantly diminished, improving quality of life.
  • Decreased risk of acute urinary retention: The combination therapy reduces the likelihood of sudden inability to urinate, which often requires emergency medical intervention.
  • Lower need for surgical intervention: Long-term use of this medicine helps improve urine flow and can lower the likelihood of needing surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

How Does Urimax 0.4 Capsule Work:

Urimax 0.4 Capsule contains the active ingredient Tamsulosin, which belongs to a group of medicines called alpha-blockers (or alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists).

It works by selectively blocking the alpha-adrenoreceptors located in the prostate gland and the bladder neck. By doing so, it prevents these smooth muscles from constricting, allowing them to relax instead. This relaxation widens the urethra, significantly increasing the flow of urine and providing relief from symptoms such as urinary retention, urgency, and painful urination.

Dosage of Urimax 0.4 Capsule:

  • Usage Direction

Take Urimax 0.4 Capsule strictly according to your doctor’s instructions, following the prescribed dose and timing. Urimax 0.4 Capsule should be swallowed whole and not be opened, chewed, or crushed, preferably at the same time each day. Do not stop or alter the dose of Urimax 0.4 Capsule without consulting your doctor, as this may prevent you from achieving the desired outcome. If you are unsure about the administration procedures of Urimax 0.4, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Urimax 0.4 Capsule, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. But, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the one you missed and continue following your regular dosing schedule. Do not attempt to take two doses if you have forgotten one.

You can set reminders on your smartphone, keep drug organizer boxes, or use other audio-visual technologies to prevent missing a dose.

  • Overdose

If you accidentally take Urimax 0.4 Capsule more than your prescribed dose, seek immediate medical advice, as this may lead to serious side effects. Symptoms of an overdose may include low blood pressure, increased heart rate, severe dizziness or fainting. Overdose can be prevented by storing the medicine in a safe place and strictly following the prescribed doses.

Contraindications of Urimax 0.4 Capsule:

Do not take Urimax 0.4 Capsule if you are hypersensitive or allergic to Tamsulosin, or any of the components of this medicine. Symptoms of allergic reactions include skin rash, itching, breathing difficulty, and swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.

Urimax 0.4 Capsule is not to be used by patients with severe liver or kidney disease, or a history of orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up).

Urimax 0.4 must not be used by women, and children.

Precautions & Warnings of Urimax 0.4 Capsule:

Before starting Urimax 0.4, inform your doctor about all your existing health conditions and current medications. Patients with a history of orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing) should use this medicine with caution, as Tamsulosin can worsen this condition. Avoid situations where fainting could result in injury, particularly when beginning therapy or after a dose increase. Patients scheduled for cataract surgery or other eye procedures should inform their ophthalmologist that they are taking or have ever taken Tamsulosin, as it can cause a complication called Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS), which may complicate the surgical procedure. Patients with a history of kidney or liver disease should seek medical advice before use. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is recommended during treatment. Since BPH and prostate cancer can present with similar symptoms, your doctor may recommend a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test or other screening before starting this medicine.

Side Effects of Urimax 0.4 Capsule:

Urimax 0.4 Capsule may cause various side effects, most of which are mild to moderate. Common symptoms include dizziness or lightheadedness due to low blood pressure, headache, ejaculation disorders (retrograde ejaculation), runny or stuffy nose, rapid heartbeat, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and blurred vision.

However, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional immediately if you experience more serious adverse reactions. These include signs of a severe allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat), difficulty breathing, rashes, itching, and priapism (an involuntary, painful, persistent erection).

Safety Related Concerns of Urimax 0.4 Capsule:

  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Urimax 0.4 Capsule is generally not indicated for use in women.

  • Alcohol

Alcohol does not directly interfere with Urimax 0.4 Capsule, but it is highly recommended to limit or avoid it during treatment. Because it could increase the risk of dizziness due to low blood pressure.

  • Food Interactions

Urimax 0.4 Capsule should be taken after meals to ensure proper absorption and to reduce the likelihood of side effects such as dizziness.

There are no specific foods that are absolutely forbidden while taking this medicine; however, grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be consumed with caution, as they may inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme responsible for metabolising Tamsulosin, potentially increasing drug levels in the blood and the risk of side effects.

  • Drug Interactions

Urimax 0.4 Capsule can interact with various medications, including strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as ketoconazole), other alpha-blockers, antihypertensive drugs, and phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors used for erectile dysfunction. These combination may lower the blood pressure. Caution is also advised when used with anticoagulants or medications affecting liver enzymes.

Always inform your healthcare provider and pharmacist about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, or herbal supplements, and potassium supplements to avoid potential interactions.

  • Using Machinery & Driving

Use caution when driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how Urimax 0.4 Capsule affects you. The medication can cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision, which can impair your coordination and reaction time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Q. When is the best time to take Urimax 0.4 Capsule?

A. It is best to take Urimax 0.4 Capsule exactly as prescribed by your doctor to ensure maximum effectiveness for your specific condition. However, it is generally advised to take the capsule approximately 30 minutes after the same meal each day (usually breakfast). Taking it after a meal helps regulate absorption and significantly reduces the risk of side effects like sudden dizziness or low blood pressure.

Q. Can Urimax cure my enlarged prostate?

A. No, Urimax is not a permanent cure for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck to improve urine flow and manage symptoms. It does not cause any shrinkage of the prostate gland. If the condition progresses or becomes severe, your doctor may recommend other medications to reduce the gland's size or suggest surgical intervention.

Q. How long does it take to see results while taking Urimax 0.4 Capsule?

A. The time to see results with Urimax 0.4 Capsule can vary based on your condition. Some people may notice improvement within a few days, while for others it may take a few weeks to get full relief. Continue taking it as advised by your doctor for the best outcome.

Q. Does Urimax 0.4 Capsule affect sex drive?

A. Generally, Urimax 0.4 does not affect libido (sex drive). However, it can cause physical changes such as ejaculatory dysfunction, most notably retrograde ejaculation (where semen enters the bladder instead of exiting the penis). While this may change the sensation of ejaculation, it is medically harmless and typically reverses once the medication is stopped. If you have concerns about sexual health, always discuss them with your healthcare provider.

Q. Does the medication affect blood pressure?
A. Yes, the active ingredient, Tamsulosin, can lower blood pressure because it works by relaxing blood vessels as well as prostate muscles. This may lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, or even fainting, particularly when you first start the medication or change your dose. It is especially important to use Urimax with caution if you are already taking other blood pressure medications, as the combined effect can cause your pressure to drop too low. Always inform your doctor of all medications you are taking to ensure a safe treatment plan.

Q. What if I have eye surgery planned while on this medication?

A. You must inform your eye surgeon immediately if you are taking (or have recently taken) Urimax 0.4 Capsule. This medication can cause a condition called Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS) during cataract or glaucoma surgery. Being aware of this allows your surgeon to use special techniques to ensure the procedure remains safe and successful. Do not stop the medication on your own; follow your surgeon's specific instructions regarding your dosage before the operation.
