Thrombophob Gel Overview:

Thrombophob Gel is a topical anticoagulant medication used to prevent clotting of blood due to various conditions, reduce swelling or inflammation (known as thrombophlebitis) and provide relief from pain due to injury.

It contains Heparin Sodium as its active ingredient, specifically designed for percutaneous (topical) therapy to treat blood clots in the superficial veins, reduce inflammation, and accelerate the healing of bruises and soft tissue injuries. Thrombophob Gel acts as a blood thinner, inhibits thrombin formation, and promotes fibrinolysis. This way it alleviates venous congestion of the extremities, injuries due to sports or accidents, sural spasm, and other inflammatory conditions.

Composition:

Each g contains- Heparin Sodium: 200 I.U., Ethanol (95%): 0.5 g, Aqueous base (Ethanol content 54% V/V): q.s., and Excipients q.s

Uses & Benefits of Thrombophob Gel:

Thrombophob Gel is prescribed for the management and relief of several vascular and inflammatory conditions:

  • Superficial Phlebitis: Helps manage inflammation of the superficial veins, with or without the formation of a blood clot (thrombus).
  • Pain & Swelling: Helps relieve localized pain, swelling, tenderness, and discomfort associated with superficial vein inflammation and minor soft-tissue injuries.
  • Blood Clot-Related Swelling: Helps support the natural resolution of localized blood accumulation and swelling associated with superficial blood clot formation.
  • Bruises & Hematomas: Helps manage bruises, hematomas, and contusions that may occur following minor injuries, accidents, or sports activities.
  • Sprains & Dislocations: Helps reduce localized swelling and discomfort associated with sprains and dislocations.
  • Venous Congestion: Helps manage symptoms associated with venous congestion of the limbs, including localized swelling and a feeling of heaviness.
  • Minor Soft-Tissue Injuries: Supports recovery from localized swelling and discomfort following minor accidental or sports-related injuries.

How Does Thrombophob Gel Work:

The main ingredient of Thrombophob Gel is Heparin Sodium, which functions through its dual-action properties as both an anti-coagulant and an anti-inflammatory.

Heparin, as a potent localized anticoagulant, prevents the formation of thrombin, a key enzyme in blood clotting, thereby stopping the growth of existing clots. Simultaneously, it promotes fibrinolysis, a natural process for breaking down small micro-clots (microthrombi) located near the skin.

Beyond clot prevention, its anti-inflammatory properties reduce the abnormal leakage of fluid from blood vessels into surrounding tissues (anti-exudative action), cause swelling, and ease pain by improving local blood circulation and reducing vascular muscle tension. This localized "decongestion" alleviates pain and restores comfort to the diseased or injured area.

Dosage of Thrombophob Gel:

  • Usage Direction

Thrombophob Gel should be applied to previously cleaned skin for better effectiveness. It should be applied in a thin layer to the affected areas and their surrounding skin, as prescribed. The gel should not be rubbed or massaged into the skin. For open wounds or ulcers, apply only to the outer skin edges, never directly into the wound.

  • Missed Dose

If you forgot to apply the Thrombophob Gel, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose and continue to use the gel as usual. Do not use an excessive amount of cream to make up for a missed dose.

  • Overdose

Since Thrombophob Gel is applied directly to the skin, the risk of systemic overdose is unlikely. If more than a thin layer is applied, the excess gel can be removed with a cloth or by washing it out. However, if swallowed accidentally, contact a healthcare professional or poison control center immediately.

Contraindications of Thrombophob Gel:

Do not use Thrombophob Gel if you are allergic to Heparin or any other ingredients in the gel. Typically, it is contraindicated for use on broken skin, open wounds, or mucous membranes.

Precautions & Warnings of Thrombophob Gel:

Thrombophob Gel is meant for external skin application only. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, or internal mucosal membranes. If it gets into the eyes accidentally, rinse them well with running water. Avoid using on weeping or infected open wounds. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the gel. If you do not see any improvement after the suggested treatment duration, consult your doctor.

Side Effects of Thrombophob Gel:

In general, Thrombophob Gel is well-tolerated, but certain users may experience some adverse reactions, particularly at the site of application. These side effects may present as mild skin irritation, redness, itching, or a burning sensation. Some rare side effects may occur due to allergic reactions on the skin. If these symptoms continue, it is crucial to seek advice from your healthcare provider.

Safety Related Concerns of Thrombophob Gel:

  • Pregnancy

Generally, Thrombophob Gel is considered safe for topical use. However, if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor about whether it is safe for you, as it may affect your developing baby during pregnancy.

  • Breastfeeding

If you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, consult your doctor to ensure the gel is not applied to the breast area before feeding.

  • Alcohol

The effects of Thrombophob Gel when combined with alcohol are currently unknown in its topical cream formulation. It is advised to consult your doctor if you are consuming alcohol while using the gel.

  • Food Interactions

Typically, there are no known food interactions for individuals using Thrombophob Gel, as it is a topical medication applied externally to the skin. Because the active ingredient acts locally and does not reach high systemic levels in the bloodstream, you can continue your usual diet without concern while using this product.

  • Drug Interactions

While Thrombophob Gel is a topical treatment, it is essential to consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are currently using, or have recently used, any other medications. Although systemic absorption is low, applying the gel over a large surface area of the skin or using it for a prolonged period may increase the amount of Heparin entering the bloodstream. If used simultaneously with oral blood thinners (anticoagulants) or medications containing acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin), there is a potential for an increased bleeding tendency or localized bruising. Additionally, avoid applying other medicated creams or ointments to the same area of skin at the same time, as this may interfere with the absorption and effectiveness of the gel.

  • Using Machinery & Driving

Thrombophob Gel have no known effect on the ability to drive or operate machinery.

Storage of Thrombophob Gel:

Store below 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Replace cap tightly after use.

Avoid using it after the expiry date, printed on the packaging. Dispose of expired or unused medication properly; do not flush or throw it away casually.

Additional Information:

  • For conditions related to the veins (such as phlebitis or congestion), elevating the affected limb and wearing compression stockings (if advised by a doctor) can reduce swelling, improve blood flow and prevent further clot formation.
  • Always clean and dry the skin area before applying the gel. Removing surface oils or debris ensures maximum absorption and enhances the localized action of the Heparin.
  • Unless your injury requires complete immobilization, stay well-hydrated and engage in light walking. Gentle movement helps the calf muscles pump blood back toward the heart, reducing the risk of further venous stagnation.
  • Do not suddenly stop your medication unless your doctor specifically tells you to.
  • Do not share your medicine with someone else having the same symptoms as you, as this gel contains a potent anticoagulant and must only be used under professional medical guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Q. Why is Thrombophob Gel used?

A. Thrombophob Gel is primarily used for the topical treatment of superficial phlebitis (blood clots in veins near the skin surface). It is also highly effective in reducing localized swelling, inflammation, and pain associated with bruises, sprains, sports injuries, and sural (calf) spasms.

Q. Can I rub Thrombophob Gel into my skin?

A. No, the gel is designed for percutaneous absorption, meaning it is formulated to penetrate the skin layers on its own. Rubbing or massaging the area can cause further irritation to the already inflamed veins or sensitive tissue and is not necessary for the medication to work.

Q. Is it safe and effective to apply Thrombophob Gel for bruises?

A. Yes, Thrombophob Gel is highly effective for treating bruises and contusions. The active ingredient, Heparin, works by accelerating the breakdown and absorption of the blood that has pooled under the skin (hematoma). This localized action significantly reduces the visible discoloration, eases the associated pain, and helps the underlying tissue heal faster.

Q. How soon can I expect to get relief after applying the gel?

A. The gel provides an almost immediate cooling and refreshing effect due to its ethanol-based aqueous base. While pain relief and cooling occur quickly, the reduction of swelling and the absorption of bruises or clots typically depends on the type of injury and the dosage prescribed by your doctor.

Q. Can I apply Thrombophob Gel to an open wound or a cut?

A. No, you should only apply the gel to the outer skin area surrounding a wound. Applying heparin directly into an open or bleeding wound may interfere with the natural clotting process required for the wound to close.

Q. Is Thrombophob Gel safe to use during pregnancy?

A. Thrombophob Gel contains heparin jelly for topical use, which is generally considered safe because very little enters the bloodstream. However, you should always consult your doctor before starting any new medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
