Sompraz 40 Tablet Overview:
Sompraz 40 Tablet contains Esomeprazole, a potent Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric or duodenal ulcers, chronic gastritis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome linked to excess stomach acid production.
Acid reflux is a condition which occurs when the stomach contents and acid flow backward into the food pipe (esophagus). This leads to a painful burning sensation and heartburn. Sompraz 40 treats these symptoms and helps prevent the recurrence of reflux-related damage. It is designed to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach, allowing the esophagus and stomach lining to heal from acid-induced damage.
Sompraz 40 Tablet also used in combination with antibiotics to treat and prevent the return of stomach ulcers caused by a certain type of bacteria (H. pylori) in adults.
Composition:
Each enteric-coated tablet contains- Esomeprazole Magnesium Trihydrate equivalent to Esomeprazole: 40 mg and Excipients q.s
Colours: Ferric Oxide (Red), Titanium Dioxide.
Uses & Benefits of Sompraz 40 Tablet:
Sompraz 40 Tablet is primarily indicated for conditions where the reduction of gastric acid is necessary for healing and symptom management:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Provides effective treatment for chronic acid reflux and its associated symptoms, including persistent heartburn and regurgitation.
- Peptic Ulcer Disease: Facilitates the healing of sores (ulcers) in the stomach or duodenum. It reduces inflammation and helps prevent complications, such as internal bleeding or perforation.
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Manages this rare condition where the stomach produces pathological levels of acid, effectively controlling the resulting ulcers and chronic diarrhea.
- H. pylori Infection: Used with antibiotics such as amoxicillin and clarithromycin to treat ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria
- NSAID-induced Ulcers: Prevents stomach ulcers in patients taking long-term pain relievers (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs).
How Sompraz 40 Tablet Works:
Sompraz 40 Tablet contains the active ingredient Esomeprazole, belongs to the group of medicines called, Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) that works by blocking the proton pumps in the stomach lining that produce acid.
These pumps are responsible for releasing acid during the final stage of acid production. By stopping their activity, Sompraz 40 reduces the amount of acid in the stomach. Lower acid levels help protect the stomach and esophagus from irritation and allow damaged tissues, such as ulcers or inflamed lining, to heal. This action also helps relieve symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn, and stomach discomfort.
Dosage of Sompraz 40 Tablet:
- Usage Direction
Take Sompraz 40 Tablet strictly according to your doctor’s instructions, following the prescribed dose and timing. Sompraz 40 Tablet should be swallowed whole and not to be crushed, or chewed, preferably at the same time each day. Do not stop or alter the dose of Sompraz 40 Tablet without consulting your doctor, as this may prevent you from achieving the desired outcome. If you are unsure about the administration procedures of Sompraz 40, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Missed Dose
If you forgot to take your dose of Sompraz 40 Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. But, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the one you missed and continue following your regular dosing schedule. Do not attempt to take two doses if you have forgotten one.
You can set reminders on your smartphone, keep drug organizer boxes, or use other audio-visual technologies to prevent missing a dose.
- Overdose
If you accidentally take Sompraz 40 Tablet more than your prescribed dose, seek immediate medical advice, or contact a poison control center. Symptoms may include confusion, drowsiness, or blurred vision.
Contraindications of Sompraz 40 Tablet:
Do not take Sompraz 40 Tablet if you are allergic to Esomeprazole Magnesium, other proton pump inhibitors (such as Omeprazole, Rabeprazole, or Pantoprazole), or any of the inactive ingredients in the formulation. Some of the symptoms of allergic reactions include severe skin rashes, hives, or angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), and in severe cases, may lead to difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Sompraz 40 Tablet should not be taken if you are using medicines that contain nelfinavir, a drug used to treat HIV infection.
Precautions & Warnings of Sompraz 40 Tablet:
Before taking Sompraz 40 Tablet, it is essential to inform your healthcare provider if you have severe liver or kidney disease. Caution is advised for long-term users, as prolonged consumption (typically over one year) may increase the risk of bone fractures in the hip, wrist, or spine. Additionally, extended use can lead to a Vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), and potentially severe kidney inflammation (interstitial nephritis).
Also, inform your doctor immediately if you experience significant weight loss, swallowing difficulty, stomach pain or indigestion, dark tarry stool, vomiting blood or food, or skin reactions, while on this medication.
Side Effects of Sompraz 40 Tablet:
While Sompraz 40 Tablet is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects, though they do not affect everyone. Most commonly reported symptoms include headache, dizziness, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, flatulence (gas), and dry mouth.
However, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional immediately if you experience more serious adverse reactions. These include signs of a severe allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat), difficulty breathing, or symptoms of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (persistent, watery stools or bloody stool). Long-term or high-dose therapy may lead to more significant complications, such as an increased risk of bone fractures (hip, wrist, and spine), Vitamin B12 deficiency, or hypomagnesemia. Other rare but serious concerns include acute interstitial nephritis (kidney inflammation), easy bruising or bleeding, urinary tract infections, and signs of abnormal liver function.
Safety Related Concerns of Sompraz 40 Tablet:
- Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor before taking Sompraz 40 Tablet. It is unknown if it is safe to take during pregnancy, so it should only be taken if prescribed by a doctor.
- Breastfeeding
It is better to avoid the use of the Sompraz 40 Tablet while breastfeeding, since it is unknown whether Esomeprazole could pass into the breast milk and affect the breastfed child. Therefore, consulting with your doctor before taking Sompraz 40 Tablet is crucial.
- Alcohol
Alcohol does not directly interfere with Sompraz 40, but it is highly recommended to avoid it during treatment. Alcohol consumption stimulates the production of stomach acid, which can irritate the gastric lining, worsen acid reflux symptoms, and counteract the benefits of the medication. Additionally, alcohol may intensify side effects such as dizziness and abdominal discomfort.
- Food Interactions
While taking Sompraz 40 Tablet, avoid spicy or junk foods, citrus fruits (like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits), acidic foods (such as tomatoes), and high-fat foods. Additionally, cut down on caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea and carbonated beverages (soda), as they may irritate your stomach.
- Drug Interactions
Sompraz 40 Tablet may interact with several medicines and affect how they work. Tell your doctor if you are taking atazanavir or nelfinavir for HIV, or ketoconazole for fungal infections, as esomeprazole may reduce their effectiveness. It can also interact with warfarin and clopidogrel, increasing the risk of abnormal bleeding. Use caution if taking medicines such as methotrexate, rifampin, digoxin, tacrolimus, or diazepam, as Sompraz 40 may raise their levels in the body.
Always consult your doctor if you are taking any herbal products or supplements while taking Sompraz 40 Tablet. As always, please consult your doctor or healthcare provider about your specific dietary needs while on Sompraz 40 Tablet.
- Using Machinery & Driving
Use caution when driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how Sompraz 40 Tablet affects you. Some patients rarely experience dizziness, which can impair your coordination and reaction time.
Storage of Sompraz 40 Tablet:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid using it after the expiry date, printed on the packaging. Dispose of expired or unused medication properly; do not throw it away casually.
Additional Notes:
- To enhance the effectiveness of Sompraz 40 Tablet, it is highly beneficial to adopt lifestyle and dietary modifications that support digestive health. Consuming a simple, balanced, and easy-to-digest diet helps reduce the workload on your stomach and minimizes acid production.
- Rather than three large meals, aim for smaller, more frequent portions throughout the day, ensuring you chew your food slowly and thoroughly to aid digestion.
- To prevent the backward flow of acid, avoid lying down or reclining for at least two to three hours after eating. Use a wedge pillow to keep your head elevated at night.
- Maintaining a healthy weight and managing stress can significantly reduce the pressure on your gastrointestinal system, leading to better long-term management of your condition and faster healing of the esophageal lining.
- Do not share your medicine with someone else having the same symptoms as you.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
Q. Why is Sompraz 40 Tablet used?
A: Sompraz 40 Tablet is primarily used to treat conditions caused by excessive stomach acid, such as GERD (acid reflux), peptic ulcers, gastritis, and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. It contains Esomeprazole, which lowers acid production to relieve pain and promote healing. It also prevents stomach ulcers in patients who have taken long-term pain medication or NSAIDs (like Aspirin or Ibuprofen).
Q. Can I take Sompraz 40 for a long time?
A: Sompraz 40 Tablet is intended for short-term relief (typically 4–8 weeks). However, long-term use requires strict monitoring by a doctor because it has certain side effects when used over an extended period.
Q. Can I take Sompraz 40 Tablet for instant relief from sudden acidity?
A: Sompraz 40 Tablet is not designed for immediate relief. For instant comfort, an antacid might be better, while Sompraz 40 works over 24-48 hours to provide long-term acid control.
Q. Is Sompraz 40 an antacid?
A: No, Sompraz 40 Tablet is not an antacid. It contains pantoprazole, which belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Sompraz 40 works by stopping the production of acid in the stomach lining, resulting in long lasting relief from conditions like GERD, acid reflux, peptic ulcers, heartburn and indigestion. On the other hand, antacids are made from compounds like calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate. These ingredients neutralize the existing stomach acid, providing quick but short term relief from symptoms like heartburn, duodenal, and gastric ulcers, etc.
Q. Is it better to take the medicine at night?
A. It is always better to take your medications at the scheduled prescribed time. However, if your primary symptom is nighttime heartburn, your doctor may suggest taking it in the evening; otherwise, a morning dose is standard.
Q. Is Sompraz 40 Tablet, a permanent cure for acidity?
A. No, Sompraz 40 Tablet does not permanently cure acidity. But it manages the symptoms and allows healing. Furthermore, lifestyle changes and dietary modifications are necessary for long-term management.
Q. Does Sompraz 40 cause bone weakness?
A. Long-term use (usually over a year) can interfere with calcium absorption. Talk to your doctor about calcium and vitamin D supplements if you are on long-term therapy.
Q. What should I do if I vomit after taking the medicine?
A. If you vomit within 30 minutes of taking the medicine, take another one. If it has been more than an hour, wait until your next scheduled dose. Or else, you can contact your physician.
