About Augmentin Injection:

Augmentin Injection is a combination of two antibacterial medicines, indicated for short-term treatment of various bacterial infections.

Each vial contains Amoxycillin Sodium (Sterile) 1060 mg equivalent to Amoxycillin 1000 mg, Potassium Clavulanate (Sterile) 238 mg equivalent to Clavulanic Acid 200 mg.

Amoxycillin belongs to a class of antibacterial medicines. It prevents bacterial infections by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which is required for the bacteria to grow and multiply.

Clavulanic acid belongs to a class of antibacterial medicines. It acts by inactivating some beta-lactamase enzymes that are produced by bacteria, thereby, preventing bacteria from destroying Amoxycillin.

Use of Augmentin Injection:

Augmentin Injection is prescribed for short-term treatment of various bacterial infections at the following sites:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections (including ENT) e.g. recurrent tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis media.
  • Lower respiratory tract infections e.g. acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, lobar, and bronchopneumonia.
  • Genito-urinary tract infections e.g. cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis.
  • Skin and soft tissue infections e.g. boils, abscesses, cellulitis, wound infections.
  • Bone and joint infections e.g. osteomyelitis.
  • Other infections e.g. intra-abdominal sepsis.

It is also prescribed for prophylaxis against infection which may be associated with major surgical procedures such as gastrointestinal, pelvic, head and neck, cardiac, renal, joint replacement, and biliary tract.

Usage Direction of Augmentin Injection:

  • Augmentin Injection is intended for intravenous use only, in a dose and direction as prescribed by the physician.
  • Refer to the packaging box guidelines to dilute, prepare & fix up the volume for Augmentin Injection.
  • Use immediately after reconstitution, do not freeze.

Precaution & Related information of Augmentin Injection:

  • Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions have been reported in patients on penicillin therapy. These reactions are more likely to occur in individuals with a history of penicillin hypersensitivity. If an allergic reaction occurs, Augmentin therapy must be discontinued and appropriate alternative therapy instituted. Serious anaphylactic reactions require immediate emergency treatment with adrenaline.
  • Augmentin Injection should be used with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction.
  • In patients with renal (kidney) impairment Augmentin Injection dosage should be adjusted.
  • Augmentin Injection should be avoided if infectious mononucleosis is suspected since the occurrence of a morbilliform rash has been associated with this condition following the use of Amoxycillin.
  • Prolonged use may also occasionally result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.
  • Pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with the use of antibiotics and may range in severity from mild to life-threatening.
  • If prolonged or significant diarrhea occurs or the patient experiences abdominal cramps, treatment should be discontinued immediately and the patient investigated further.
  • If the parenteral administration of high doses is necessary, the sodium content must be taken into account in patients on a sodium-restricted diet.
  • During the administration of high doses of Amoxycillin it is advisable to maintain adequate fluid intake and urinary output to reduce the possibility of Amoxycillin crystalluria.
  • Abnormal prolongation of prothrombin time has been reported rarely in patients receiving Augmentin Injection and oral anticoagulants. Appropriate monitoring should be undertaken when anticoagulants are prescribed concurrently. Adjustments in the dose of oral anticoagulants may be necessary to maintain the desired level of anticoagulation.
  • If found any other complications, inform the physician immediately.
  • The physician should be aware of the concomitant use of Augmentin Injection with any other medication.
  • The preparation contains penicillin.
  • Not for intramuscular use.
  • Single-use vial only.
  • Consult with the physician during pregnancy & lactation.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
